"I'm interested in: history, how technology is interwoven with nature, the impact we have on the environment, the traces and scars we leave behind and the energy being reflected by these scars. I juxtapose past and present, nature and technology, often symbolized by the North American bison and railway tracks or oil pump jacks. It is also reflected by my use of technique which involves the old medium of painting and the relatively new technology of photography, pictures that have been altered with paint and a laser copier. Since March 2006 I'm working on a project, DIESELMAN, consisting of sculptures and paintings. There is also film and photography (primarily documentation material) although some film footage is being taken to be used in context of a larger installation. DIESELMAN is as much a formal exercise as it is a reflection of consumerism, economical turmoil and the ongoing political conflicts over fossil fuel. Some of the sculptures (barbed wire and steel) are constructed around a core made of wood and paper. Next I burn them completely with the help of some diesel. The sculptures are then welded onto steel plates, brake rotors, car rims or mounted onto a concrete base. Other works are made of steel (exhaust pipes and mufflers), barbed wire, fiber glass or torn canvasses, (no burning involved). Everything is painted black. Rusted barbed wire is being worked around and into the sculpture. Some of the paintings in the DIESELMAN project are referencing the heads of the partially burned sculptures full of ashes with bits and pieces of wood and newsprint still recognizable while others depict images of petroleum industry machinery and burned out cars. DIESELMAN is an open end project consisting of several fragments, each one a series or group of work of its own." |
